The question of the day is what part of my routine do I always try to skip? I wrote about my morning routine a while back, so I thought it might be appropriate to reblog it here. Of course, I have other routines, not just a morning one, but for some reason people think about the morning as being mostly routine. I guess it’s because it’s easy to settle into a pattern for morning activities, which helps when you are half asleep. The answer to this question is I usually don’t skip any part of my routine, unless I skip all of it and stay home.
I’m not sure if other people think like this, but I am sort of a process engineer. My mind naturally puts together the exact series of steps that I need to do to achieve the result with absolute efficiency. The efficiency part is my minimalism kicking in. I don’t want to include things I really don’t need to do, not in the ungodly hours of the morning anyway. If I added too much, I’d have to get up even earlier, which would be positively dreadful! If I took anything out, I might miss something critical, like my morning coffee! Of course, in that circumstance, I’d just buy a latte, but I would be very sleepy on my way in to work.
The part of the routine I would most like to skip is actually the routine part of the routine. I feel like routines dramatically lower my quality of life. I don’t like them or want them. What I love most is being very spontaneous! If I happen to just wake up at 5:00 AM, that’s fine, but I don’t want an alarm clock disturbing my slumber before I’m ready to get up. It drives some people mad, but I actually love just doing things on the spur of the moment. I think that’s how life was meant to be lived. It maximizes enjoyment!
There’s another thing I would like to skip in the morning. I would skip the shower! Don’t worry though. Hygiene is very important to me, so I wouldn’t go without one. I just don’t like to take showers in the morning. I think it’s that I don’t really want to be awake, and the water sort of slaps you in the face with wakefulness. It’s almost painful to me. I’d prefer to take a shower later in the day when I’m already fully awake. On the weekends, I might even wait until the evening, right before I go out on the town.
In a perfect world, I’d wake up whenever my body said it was time, lounge around the house drinking lots of coffee, then eventually do whatever needs to be done in a completely spontaneous manner whenever I feel like it. Who knows where I might end up on such a day. Every day would be an adventure!
